I’ve worked on archaeology digs at 4 sites in the Middle East, some of them for multiple years. Tell Hamoukar in Syria, Hierakonpolis and Wadi Gawasis in Egypt, and Tell Tayinat in Turkey.
When it comes to the various people I’ve met throughout my travels, I’d say there are 4 types: Archaeology colleagues, Dig staff, hired workers, and locals who live near either the site or our accommodations. Everyone has always been extremely kind and fun to be around, and are people I’m lucky to be able to call ‘friend.’
I’ve lived in a variety of places ranging from rented apartments to a “5 stars for archaeology” mid-range resort, to a mud brick house built especially for the dig.
